Using public transport to get to work

The government are trying to encourage people to use public transport or at least share car journeys when travelling to and from a place of work. This is to try and cut down on pollution levels and the impact it is having on the environment. This sounds like a good idea, but is the public transport industry really set up to accommodate this? In some rural parts of the country, buses still only run every hour or so, making it difficult to sometimes get to work, you may end up being 40 minutes early or having to be 10 minutes late which isn’t really acceptable. Also in my experience, buses are not always reliable and can be late, meaning that you turn up for work later than expected. It can take a lot longer to get to your destination by public transport due to the number of stops that have to be made and also the route taken; this all puts people off from using these services.
